Grown In Britain

The new Grown in Britain campaign was formally launched in the House of Lords this week.  It is aiming to encourage consumers to buy wood products that were grown and processed in the UK.

Peter Solly, Forest Fuels Managing Director says “We are delighted that Grown in Britain is gathering this momentum.  Since the outset, Forest Fuels has been completely focussed on using local, UK-grown timber in our operations. Using this country’s renewable resource rather than importing makes logical sense to us. Grown in Britain enables the whole UK industry to stand shoulder-to-shoulder and demonstrate to consumers the value of local timber”.

Forest Fuels has been signed up to the Grown in Britain initiative since its inception earlier this year.

RHI secure, despite government clashes on Energy Prices

At Prime Ministers' Questions yesterday, energy prices were the cause of deep disagreement between the Prime Minister and Ed Miliband. During the exchange, on the topic of RHI, the PM suggested that the Coalition had "cancelled" the policy. It is important to note that the Prime Minister was briefed incorrectly in giving this response, and this has been confirmed by the Government. The reference was merely pointing out the fact that the Coalition changed the source of funding for the RHI from an additional levy on fossil fuels (which the PM suggested, as a Labour idea, would have added £179 to the average fuel bill) to being funded by general taxation.

The RHI has an agreed budget, with an additional £430m of funding confirmed for the final year of this Comprehensive Spending Review period (2015/2016)

RHI Payment rate update

The RHI is proving a considerable success, with ever-increasing numbers of schemes being approved and receiving cheques.  DECC have always been committed to avoiding the large drops in tariff rates as happened with Solar PV, and have put in place a well thought-out means of gently reducing payment rates when the uptake reaches a certain level.  We have been surprised (and pleased!) that this reduction hasn’t happened already.

DECC announced last week that the first reduction in RHI tariff will take effect from 1st July 2013 for new entrants to the scheme only.  The reduction in tariffs is small (circa 5%) and is for “medium” biomass schemes (ie boilers of 200 – 999kW size) only.  The reduction has been put into place because this size category has seen the biggest uptake.  Interestingly the smaller category (<199kW) was almost reduced as well.

Encouragingly, the rate is still higher than it was in 2012, before recent RPI increases.

The small reduction is unlikely to affect the viability of the majority of schemes. But it does illustrate that rates will fall and therefore now is the time to act if you are considering biomass.  Delaying only makes it more likely that rates will have fallen further by the time your scheme is installed. Our knowledgeable and friendly staff can help with discussing the options, feasibility and outline design of schemes.

Please ring us if we might be able to help….

Customer feedback for consultancy

We have recently received this from a customer:

"I am considering installing wood fuel heating for my house and holiday cottages, and have relied heavily on Forest Fuels’ advice throughout the process. They have helped with the decision of whether or not wood fuel is right for my property, and then inputted into the design and layout of my system and fuel store. Their impartiality as to equipment manufacturers and installers has been hugely helpful in getting a wood fuel solution that best suits my needs. The project has also benefitted enormously from their wealth of experience and expertise."
Paul Jobin, Watchet
